"Medical Homes" Hospitable Option in Colorado, Elsewhere

National reform proposals call for spreading the medical-home concept across the nation. In Colorado, the state Medicaid program began giving extra money last month to pediatricians' offices that are medical homes. The Colorado Trust is spending $1.4 million to help with research and technology at the clinics, and the Commonwealth Fund and the Harvard School of Public Health will use Colorado data to see whether medical homes save money and provide better care. - 07/19/09

The Bell Policy Center's report Looking Forward: Colorado's Fiscal Prospects Amid a Financial Crisis looks at recent trends and calculates the costs of maintaining current state services through fiscal year 2012-13. Kaiser Donates $2.4 Million to Shore Up Rural Care

Kaiser Permanente is giving $2.4 million to help train more medical professionals who will work in isolated areas the state. The effort is one of several: CU-Denver created a rural track four years ago to increase the number of students who practice in rural areas, and the Colorado Rural Health Center is dedicated to increasing the number of medical professionals throughout the state. The group administers several scholarships and outreach programs funded by The Colorado Trust, the Boettcher Foundation, the Colorado Medical Society and COPIC. - 06/18/09
Colorado Health Care Organizations Unveil Comprehensive Patient-centered Medical Home Programs

The Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative and a coalition of Colorado health care organizations today announced parallel programs to test the viability and effectiveness of the Patient-centered Medical Home concept. A $1.4 million two-year initiative funded by The Colorado Trust will help provide enhanced compensation for 17 Colorado internal or family medicine practice sites that have agreed to serve as patient-centered medical homes to deliver expanded care and services to their patients. The Trust, along with The Commonwealth Fund and the Harvard School of Public Health, will also evaluate this demonstration project in Colorado to improve primary care delivery by aligning high quality, coordinated care with financial incentives. - 06/18/09
Collaborative Announces Health Care Program

Five of Colorado's largest health insurance plans – Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealthcare – will contribute money to a pilot program that coordinates medical and reimbursement practices for 17 primary care practice sites in the state, with the goal of improving health care quality and managing costs. The program will provide participating practices with in-office coaching and technology through grants totaling $2.8 million from The Colorado Trust, the Commmonwealth Fund and the Colorado Health Foundation. - 06/11/09

Awareness and research about mental illness is on the rise. According to The Colorado Trust, Colorado’s average suicide rate has declined by 6.5 percent over the past decade, but we have one of the higher suicide rates in the country. And the National Alliance on Mental Illness graded the states on mental health treatment and services for 2009; Colorado earned a “C” grade, scoring highest in financing, core treatment and recovery services, and flunking in health promotion and measurement.
